The Black Songs follows the story of Mathus, a lonely hunter for a group known as the Circle of Nine. Languishing in a time of darkness, chaos, monsters, and death, these hunters seek out Golden Tablets, holy relics which detail knowledge of the past and its technologies. Along with these useful boons, they also seek out the Divine Envoy, a being blessed by the creator of the universe to shape reality into perfection who seemingly has now cast the world into ruin. This era, the Era of Black Songs, stand in antithesis to what it is compared to: the Era of High Songs, where the world is perfect.
And so Mathus scours the world, fighting the demonic Wraiths which prey upon the living, and their Thralls who are reanimated victims, now enslaved to their master’s will, all in an effort to usurp the Divine Word and, along with his order, reform the world into a perfect eden.
