In The Autumn Dusk

In the autumn dusk there are unexpected
Flower falls that drop pink petals so affected
By gravity to the grassy floor below.
Falling, they drift and float down soft and slow
Away from branches and dying stems, rejected.

These petals feed the trees they were connected
To in life. By the wind they are directed
To the earth, left ablaze, left aglow,
In the autumn dusk.

These petals are not the only expected
Thing to fall. Most green things are subjected
To the coming of the promised winter’s snow.
And most things die and are reborn, although
They feel again the life and death reflected
In the next autumn dusk.
